Located on the northeast shore of the lake, about a mile south of
Sand Harbor lays Nevada State Park’s Thunderbird Lodge.
“Captain” George Whittell, Jr. built this estate with the inherited
fortune of his father who was deeply involved in the Gold rush of
California, and Silver rush on Nevada.  Mr. Whittell was an
extravagant man barreling through life at full-throttle, collecting
exotic animals, elegant automobiles, boats, beautiful women, and
contentious lawsuits all while acquiring 27 mile of Lake Tahoe
coastline.

The chateau-like main lodge is connected to various walkways and
tunnels all connected by granite staircases.  There are two smaller
buildings, one for the lions and elephants, and the other is a very
elaborate card house.  Also visible is a gazebo, miniature lighthouse,
and 100’ long boat house which still holds Mr. Whittell’s fabulous
mahogany yacht, The Thunderbird.  This work of art is a priceless
collector’s item.   Capable of 60 knots the Thunderbird is equipped
with twin v-12 Allison aircraft engines.  Occasionally the boat will
present itself for an unbelievable photo opportunity.

Visitors are not allowed to go ashore, however, we get as close a
possible in order for you to experience it all.
