This large rock formation was once the neck of a volcanic vent that
existed on the site 5,000,000 years ago.  Cave rock is named after the
cave that exist on the south side of the formation.  3,000,000 years ago
the water level was hundreds of feet higher.  It is estimated the caves
were created when water lashed at the rock for thousands of years.

Due to its visibility from almost anywhere in the lake, Cave Rock was
used by the native Washoe Indian tribe as a place of spiritual worship.
The Washoe refer to the formation as the “Lady of the Lake” because
when you are in a boat on the north side of the formation the profile of
the rock is of a women’s face.
